Everyone should celebrate the Day of the Dead... Everyone should celebrate the Day of the Dead... Even though it's a sacred Mexican holiday that isn't to be confused with Halloween. Dia de los muertos is to honor those that have passed. For me, it helps me to remember their lives, what they loved, and the unique things they enjoyed. 1. Ofrenda: Each year, I tried to use different pictures than the year before. I sometimes include candies, things they made me, or other things they loved. I usually put it up in September and keep it up until about mid-november or so. I walk by it everyday, and think about all the memories that we created together. 2. My favorite part of celebrating is the food! I sometimes have Ande's mints because my grandmother loved those. And on November 2nd, we will have All sorts of food that they loved. We may have fast food that they loved, or ordered their favorite dessert, I'd like to mix it up and have a variety of foods that the variety of people I am honoring loved. Last year I made sure I got my mother's favorite dessert, tiramisu. 3. I love playing music around this time of year. I'll play songs that they loved, or I will play songs that make me think of them. It always brings back memories I had forgotten about. 4. The Dumb supper: This is not part of the Day of the Dead culture. But I always have a dumb supper around this time. It is a dinner that you have in silence With the intention that those that you have loved and lost would be with you enjoying the meal. Even though the dumb supper has pagan origins, and to sometimes use that spell work, I do not use it that way. I use it to feel closer to my loved ones in heaven. I started celebrating Dia De Los Muetros years ago. I always wanted to be true to the origins, and to ensure that I did everything the perfect way. But now, I've put my own spin on things. And I absolutely love it. No disrespect to the Mexican culture, I absolutely love this holiday. But with my creative mind and my big heart, I added some things to make it even more special between me and my loved ones. I hope that you also create your a ofrenda and remember your loved ones especially around this time.
